Using Barley Bags is a natural way to help combat common algae problems. Barley Bags should be applied in the early Spring, before the growing season starts, and into the Fall to protect the pond over the Winter months.

What does Barley do for a pond? Some studies have shown that when barley is exposed to sunlight, oxygen and pond water, natural bacteria will begin to decompose the Barley, releasing natural chemicals into the water that may help reduce the growth of new algae in your pond. It may help provide clearer water in about 3-8 weeks, depending on air and water temperatures.

Directions for Barley Straw Bales for Ponds: Place first bag in a desired area, where there is adequate water movement and air flow. 3 weeks later place another bag in another desired location. After 6 weeks, from beginning of the treatment, replace the first bag with a new bag. Continue this process throughout the Summer, into the Fall.

**Make sure you have adequate circulation and always follow directions closely.

Product Tip: Barley Bags should be used with a bacteria booster – like Pond Basics Sludge & Muck B-Gone.We recommend also using barley in conjunction with your beneficial bacteria.

*Keep in mind, that barley straw does not kill existing algae, it may only help to reduce the growth of new algae. Scoop out as much of the pre-existing algae as you can.
