Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum) is a fast-growing, free-floating aquatic plant that’s an excellent addition to ponds and water gardens. Known for its feathery, deep green foliage, Hornwort can either float freely or be loosely anchored, making it a versatile and low-maintenance choice for pond owners of all experience levels.

One of the biggest benefits of Hornwort is its natural ability to improve water quality. It absorbs excess nutrients like nitrates and phosphates, helping to reduce algae growth and keep pond water clear. As it grows, it also releases oxygen into the water, supporting fish health and promoting a balanced ecosystem.

Hornwort provides valuable shelter for fish, fry, and beneficial insects, offering protection from predators and harsh sunlight. Its dense structure also helps shade the pond, further limiting algae blooms. Please note: Hornwort is sold in bundles, held together by a weight. Each bundle has about 4-6 strands, depending on the size of individual strand.

• Size: Stems can grow up to 24 “ long
• Hardiness zone: 4-11
• Fertilization: Absorbed from your pond water!
• Habit: Submerged, non-rooting underwater plant with leaves packed tight in whorls that form plumes at the end.
• Cultivation: Submerged, non-rooting plant placed 6-10” below pond water’s surface. It needs to get some sunlight to work properly, as they help to prevent “pea-soup” green water.

For Submerged Pond Plants (like hornwort, ludwigia or sagtitaria) we recommend having one bundle/plant per 2 square foot of surface area.
