Description

Gambusia "Mosquito Fish" (Gambusia affinis, Gambusia holbrooki)

Gambusia is a genus of fish with over 40, mostly freshwater, species.  They are a small, live bearing, and considered 'larvivorous' die to primarily feeding on mosquito and other insect larvae.  Gambusia have been largely used to combat abundant mosquito populations and have subsequently become an invasive species in some parts of the world.  Ensure that Gambusia is legal in your area before attempting to purchase and introduce to your pond or water garden.

  • Small, sizes range from 1 to 2.8 inches
  • Typically live 1-2 years but can live up to 3 with proper care 
  • Growth rate is temperature dependent
